This quilt was made partly as a knee-jerk reaction to a judge's comment - 'but it's not really very innovative' (made to a friend of mine). I decided to try something indisputably innovative, so designed a dragon, based on a drawing from Peru, that could be made completely out of log cabin blocks. For materials I collected a large number of store plastic carrier bags, which I cut up into strips. The log cabins were constructed so that they were double sided, and the strips joined from light or dark colours as the design called for. I used a simple large zig zag stitch to join the blocks together, and used handles from the bags for the hanging system. The plastic was remarkably simple, and satisfying, to sew together, and had the added benefit of not fraying. One important consideration if you decide to try using plastic shopping bags - do make sure they are not biodegradable!
