Kanketsu was inspired by some Japanese quilts I saw in Holland in the early 2000s - complicated quits made with a very limited colour palette. The black log cabin blocks are made from recycled japanese kimonos, some with the marks of hems and darning still visible, with some newer black fabrics mixed in. The idea is to make texture the defining quality of the logs. The centres, and occasional extra colour details, are made from a hand marbled fabric bought in Holland from an American supplier. The blocks were foundation pieced onto a calico square, and the quilt is tied at the corners of each block. Additional quilting is supplied by small sections of black seed stitches (it is a very difficult quilt to photograph). It was accepted into the Quilt 2007 competition and displayed at a number of venues around the UK. It was also part of the UK entries for the American World Quilt and Textile Competition in 2008.
